Freddie's Coquito (Creamy Tropical Liqueur)
Ingredients:
2 cans cream of cocoanut (Coco-Lopez)
2 cans condensed milk
4 - 6 oz Bacardi white rum
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a blender or food
processor. Store refrigerated. Remove
from refrigerator a half hour prior to
serving and warm slightly (Freddie thinks
the optimum temperature is obtained by
warming on the back of a computer
monitor).

"Magical Staves
"A small sample of the magical staves and
characters found in Icelandic grimoires. A number of grimoires can be found
in collections of Icelandic manuscripts. A few of these have been dated
to the time of the witch-hunts though the majority are from the eighteenth
and nineteenth century, and some are copies made in the early 1900s. Some
mix primitive medicine with darker parts but all of them include signs
and drawings as an important part of the magic. Very little of this material
has been printed in its original form. The following samples are taken
at random from various collections. The texts are not translated in full
but are intended to give some idea of the contents of Icelandic grimoires.
"Necropants
/ Nábrókarstafur
"These were made with the intact skin
of the lower part of the human body, dug up from a church yard. When worn
they will become undistinguishable from one's own skin. The stave should
be kept in the scrotum along with a coin stolen from a poor widow. Money
will then constantly be drawn into the scrotum.
"A Stave to Raise the Dead / Stafur
til að vekja upp draug
"This sign can be used to wake from the
dead, to exterminate a ghost, and it also has the power to drive away evil
spirits. It must be carved on the skin of a horse's head with a mixture
of blood from a seal, a fox, and a man. This verse must be recited with
it:

ANGRY MONKEYS HALT TRAFFIC
Sept. 19, 2000 — A mass of
furious monkeys in India's northeastern state of Assam brought traffic
to a standstill on Monday after a baby monkey was hit by a car on a
busy street.
At least 100 monkeys
quickly mobilized in the city of Tezpur and encircled the young injured
primate. Rajib Saikia, a government information officer, said, "A baby
monkey which strayed into the town was hit by a car while trying to cross
the road. Its hind legs were crushed and it lay listless on the road."
He added, "In no time, more than a 100 monkeys descended on the street
from all directions and blocked off traffic."
The angry monkeys kept
traffic halted for more than a half hour as they tried to care for the
infant. A local shopkeeper, Abhinab Goswami, said, "All the while the monkeys
monitored the condition of the injured baby. It was very emotional ...
some of them massaged its legs. Finally, they left the scene carrying the
injured baby with them."
Officials were unable
to determine if the injured monkey had died, as the adult monkeys would
not allow humans near it and carried it off.

"Do you believe in God?" asked the fundamentalist. "Which one?" replied the reader of this book. Building on the foundations of its earlier and shorter version (The Hidden Tradition in Europe (1994)) in The Other God, Warburg Institute researcher Yuri Stoyanov provides everything you ever wanted to know about dualism, but were afraid Yahweh would get angry if you asked. Starting in ancient Egypt and the conflict between the gods Horus and Set, Stoyanov takes the reader on an admirably thorough and fascinatingly researched trek through the growth and spread of dualist theology, from Zoroaster's war between Ahura Mazda and Ahriman, through Orphism, Mithraism, Gnosticism, Mani, 'the Apostle of Light', to the medieval heresy of the Bogomils and, perhaps the most beloved of Christian heretics, the Cathars.
The basic idea behind religious dualism is that the world and, indeed, our very souls, are the battlefield for a titanic war between two opposing dieties, a "fundamental antagonism and irreducible cosmic conflict" between the powers of Good and Evil. In his 400-plus densely packed pages, Stoyanov here spells out in painstaking detail the main streams and hidden tributaries of this 'esoteric' heritage of the west.
Mere trickles of this bubble up in our contemporary consciousness, like the pub quiz trivia about the source of the word 'buggery' - a reference to the supposed perverse practices of the Bogomils, who would be insulted by the association, since they considered themselves "worthy of God's grace", the actual meaning of their name. But variants of dualism have saturated western consciousness since its inception, and its perspectives and metaphysics have informed some of the most influential spirits of our own time, people like William Blake, Friedrich Nietzsche and Carl Jung, as well as the 'esoteric' systems of occultists and magicians like Rudolf Steiner, G.I. Gurdjieff and Aleister Crowley. Hollywood too hasn't been untouched by the dualist belief in the "exile of the divine soul in the prison house of the body," as late 90s blockbusters like The Matrix made clear. And the growing mania for conspiracy theories of all shapes and sizes hitting the start of the third millennium is another expression of the cosmic paranoia dualists have experienced throughout the ages. As Stoyanov makes clear, dualism is not a eccentric belief system of some ancient sects, but a perennial counter-current to the reigning 'monotheism', whether Christian or our own 'scientific' orthodoxy.
A review of this size cannot do justice to the book's wealth of research and historical insight. The chapters on the Cathars ('pure ones') are as concise and encompassing as one could want, and are mirrored in the sections on Gnosticism, the rise of Christianity and the 'riddle of Bogomil beginnings'. The 30-plus page bibliography is a indispensable starter set for the ambitious reader, interested in knowing more about this generally ignored area of western culture. But as Stoyanov has absorbed and distilled the essential elements into his grand account, tracing his own sources seems superfluous. It is difficult to think that any later treatment will supercede The Other God as the standard text on the subject.
